Clark recycling event nets P.5-M

CLARK FREEPORT — In celebration of World Earth Day, the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) announced that the recent recycling event here yielded a total amount of P541,388.50 in waste materials from various locators inside this Freeport.

The 13th Recyclables Collection Event last April 22 coincided with the implementation of the total ban on the use of plastic and polystyrene (brand name: Styrofoam) on various business entities, especially in commercial establishments.

The celebration and the recycling event was spearheaded by CDC’s Environmental Permits Department (EPD), in cooperation with the Environmental Management Bureau of regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Luzon, and the Environmental Practitioners Association (EPA).

CDC-EPD Manager Rogelio Magat said that some 28,186 pieces of busted fluorescent lamps and bulbs were collected by Metro Clark Waste Management worth P281,860; a total of 7,215 liters of used oil, including tv and computer monitors was collected by Joechem Environmental Corp. with worth of P43,412; some 681 pieces of empty ink cartridges and toners was collected by Inkline Trading worth about P11,856.

Likewise, the recycling event also netted some 866 pieces of used lead-acid batteries by Oriental and Motolite Marketing Corp. and ABS-CBN Bantay Baterya worth P173,247; while 6,217 kilogram of recyclables and electronic wastes was collected by Semirecycling, Co. Inc. worth P31,015.50.

More than 60 companies participated in the 1-day event, Magat said in his report.

The event aims to promote recycling and materials recovery as viable options to reduce the volume of residual wastes while promoting awareness among our various small and medium business establishments on proper management of hazardous wastes like busted lamps and bulbs, used oil, used batteries, empty ink cartridges and toners, and electronic wastes otherwise known as white goods and consumer electronics.

The event was attended by Evangeline Tejada, vice president for Business Development and Business Enhancement Group of CDC and welcomed all stakeholders and guests during the 13th recycling event.

Tejada emphasized the efforts of CDC in combating climate change as directed by CDC President Arthur P. Tugade through the creation of CDC Climate Change Committee (C4), including the state-owned Climate Change Plans and Programs (C2P2) such as the RCE, phase out of disposable plastics and polystyrene, promotion of eco-bags, Green Building Code of Clark, installation of LEDs on all streetlights, vertical gardens, solar roofing of CDC buildings, and the operation of 22-MW solar power project which operated last month.

She added that CDC, with the efforts in being done by CDC on battling climate change, is looking for more renewable energy projects to be established in Clark such as the Waste-to-Energy project.

Meanwhile, Regional Director Lormelyn E. Claudio of EMB Region III acknowledged the joint efforts of CDC and EPA for organizing the 13th RCE here and is again hoping to break previous record that was set last year.

Magat also said the event was organized to create an awareness among this Freeport’s stakeholders and encourages local government units to emulate the event to increase awareness further.

As proof based the volume of wastes collected, it clearly shows that all stakeholders in Clark including CDC and Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) are compliant on environmental laws and doing their share to reduce its carbon footprint, consequently minimizing the impacts of climate change.

In closing, CDC awarded Certificates of Recognition to all service providers including that of Phoenix Semiconductor Philippines Corp (PSPC) and Amertron Inc. for generously donating all its used-lead acid batteries (ULAB) to ABS-CBN Bantay Baterya Program around P130,000. (CDC CommDep)
